My InstaWeek: Celebrating Life

December 9, 2013 3:25 pm

Let’s try a new format, more about shall we?

This week saw me try my very first oyster, info at the new restaurant Mondiall. In fact I downed two in one sitting… and had another one on Saturday morning, and tried it at dinner Saturday night. I’m a very picky eater, so this is cause for celebration.

While being a freelancer means no company holiday party, I was lucky enough to crash someone else’s — thanks to the Africa Travel and Tourism Association for letting me join the fun at their celebration at the beautiful Bay Hotel in Camps Bay. I particularly loved the band playing Christmas carols.

Speaking of Camps Bay… how about that sunset? Hashtag wow.

Thursday evening brought with it some sad news: the passing of Nelson Mandela. I went to a memorial service at the Grand Parade, where he gave his first post-prison address, the next day. It was a beautiful mix of people coming together to celebrate Madiba’s legacy.

And when I say celebrate, I do mean celebrate: this was a joyous occasion, not a somber one.

Saturday morning I went on a Cape Town food tour with local bloggers Ishay Govender-Ypma and Dawn Jorgensen. It was great seeing the city through their eyes… and it was fun spotting this sign in Bo-Kaap too.

I ended the week in Stellenbosch, where I stayed at the lovely Majeka House. I had to get some work done, but I ain’t complaining – how’s that for an office?

Stellenbosch is a really charming little town in the Winelands, well worth a detour from Cape Town. If you go, I highly recommend the weekly Root 44 Market, as well as the old-world bakery/cafe/food market Schoon de Companje.
